Over the years, Battle for Dream Island has accumulated a huge cast of characters. Season 1 began with 20 contestants: Blocky, Bubble, Coiny, Eraser, Firey, Flower, Golf Ball, Ice Cube, Leafy, Match, Needle, Pen, Pencil, Pin, Rocky, Snowball, Spongy, Teardrop, Tennis Ball, and Woody. The host was a faceless gray speaker box called the Announcer. Halfway through the season, the creators started allowing viewers to comment the names of their own characters to be put in large crowds of in-universe BFDI fans, and in episode 18, one of them got to become a contestant.
Season 2's cast was a mix of old and new: 12 fan-favorite season 1 contestants and 10 recommended-character newcomers decided by a viewer vote. The Announcer was absent this time, and the person acting as host kept switching almost every episode, including other speaker boxes, eliminated contestants, and a swarm of bugs. Season 3 is a non-competition season that directly continues from season 2, so the cast stayed mostly the same, with the first few eliminated contestants removed and some non-competitors added.
Season 4 had the biggest cast of all. Every past competitor from seasons 1 and 2 returned, plus all but two of the rejects from the season 2 cast-deciding vote and four new people, for a whopping 64 total contestants. After 10 were eliminated, a new host arrived and the show split into two. 14 contestants stayed in season 4, and 40 switched to season 5. Season 5 also kicked off with two more recommended characters joining the game. The hosts of these two seasons belong to an alien number species from an animation Cary Huang made before BFDI called X Finds Out His Value. Four and X host season 4, and Two hosts season 5. Other numbers appear in side plots and in a series of shorts celebrating Jacknjellify's subscriber milestones.
